LOST PLANET ภาคที่ 3 นี้ตัวเกมจะดำเนินเรื่องย้อนกลับไปยังเรื่องราวของดาวหายนะดวงเดิม E.D.N. III ในยุคที่มีน้ำแข็งปกคลุมซึ่งเป็นเนื้อเรื่องก่อนภาคแรก Lost Planet : Extreme Condition เสียอีก และหลังจากโดนด่าเรื่องเกมเพลย์ไปอย่างมากจากภาคสอง ที่เน้นส่วน Multiplayer มากเกินไป เกมส์ Lost Planet 3 จะกลับมาเน้นเนื้อเรื่องในโหมด Campaign กันอีกครั้งแบบภาคแรก, เนื้อเรื่องของ Lost Planet 3 จะเป็นยุคแรกๆที่มนุษย์ได้ย้ายมาตั้งถิ่นฐานบนดาว E.D.N.III ซึ่งตอนแรกยังเป็นยุคน้ำแข็งอยู่ ซึ่งมนุษย์กลุ่มแรกที่มาก็คือ NEVEC ส่วนตัวผู้เล่นเราจะรับบทเป็น Jim Peyton หนึ่งในสมาชิก NEVEC ที่มาตั้งถิ่นฐานยังดาวใหม่นี้ เพื่อขุดหาแร่และส่งกลับไปยังโลก โดยที่ไม่รู้ว่ามีอันตรายรอเขาอยู่ ซึ่งศัตรูของเขาก็คือพวก Akrid เอเลี่ยนโหดที่อาศัยบนดาวดวงนี้และพวกโจรสลัดฝ่ายต่อต้าน
